Employer: Tacoma Public Schools/ UWT
Gets around by: Bus and Bike
Where do you live and where do you work?
I live about 3.5 miles away in East Tacoma. I am also a student at UW Tacoma.
How do you get there?
I alternate between bus and bike depending on the weather and other factors.
How does it all add up?
I already pay for a bus pass through UWT and I wouldn’t save money by canceling it. Add in bike maintenance and I actually lose money. Biking takes the same amount of time as the bus, too.
The real benefit is in freeing myself from the bus schedule. I can leave the house at a later time because I don’t have to worry about missing the bus. Also, if the bus would get me there early, I can shave additional time. This adds up to 5-10 minutes per day. It also opens up more lunch options that aren’t within walking distance.
What’s in it for you?
Personally, I just love being on my bike. A quick cardio workout in the morning helps me feel more awake in class. Nothing beats the satisfaction of arriving at my destination under my own power when everyone else used big internal combustion engines. It is self-reliance.
Do you have any tips?
Make biking convenient. Have everything you need ready to go. If the sun is out, you can just hop on your bike instead of driving. If switching to your bike requires a change of clothes, packing a different bag, digging your bike out of the garage, and reinflating the tires, you’ll never be able to bike on a whim.
