Occupation: Volunteer Coordinator
Employer: LeMay – America’s Car Museum
Gets around by: Walk (most common by far), bus, carpool, and drive
Where do you live and where do you work? I live on the East Side and work at the LeMay Museum
How do you get there? Walk
How does it all add up? How much money or time do you save? I save zero time, but I figure I save money on gas, parking, wear and tear on a car, and a gym membership.
What’s in it for you? Several years ago I decided that I wanted to start walking to work to save money on gas and parking but also to get exercise. My husband and I share a car so it was also a practical maneuver to free up the car for those times we REALLY needed it versus every day wear and tear. I went to a podiatrist and got fitted for orthotics then started walking the two miles to the Tacoma Art Museum. It was hard at first and I had to stop a lot and catch my breath, especially on the hill back home. I now weigh 80 pounds less and the walk gives me a chance to prep for my day on the way in or decompress on the way home. It feels great! When I looked for another job, it was imporant to me to be able to keep on walking so, now that I am at LeMay – America’s Car Museum, I continue to walk to and from work most days no matter the weather (except lightning storms, I try to avoid those!)
