Where do you live and where do you work?
I live in the North Slope and I work downtown. Our home is in a walkable neighborhood, close enough to downtown to have many transportation options.
How do you get there?
I usually take the bus.
I take routes 11 or 16. The routes are very convenient for me. I can hop on the bus and be at work in 15 minutes. Often I drop-off my children at school before work or pick them up on my way home, and the bus even works well with that added to my commute.
When I have a little extra time, I walk to or from work, and I love walking through Wright Park on my route.
Occasionally I will bike into work. It is a fast, easy downhill ride in, and more work climbing the hill on the way home. I’m a bit of a fair weather biker, but I do enjoy the days I bike to work.
How does it all add up? How much money and time do you save?
We’re a one-car family, so we know we save thousands of dollars every year by not having a second car. I take the bus and my husband bikes to work, so often our car stays at home.
What’s in it for you?
I save money by not owning a car and paying for parking, and my employer pays for my ORCA pass. Riding the bus, walking, and biking have also allowed me to get to know my community better. It slows me down a bit to take in everything around me.
Do you have any tips for people who might be trying this mode for the first time?
Call Downtown On the Go! Go to the Pierce Transit website to “Plan Your Trip” and see the bus schedules, and use the free One Bus Away app.
